Overview

Both SFTP and VAN are popular means of file exchange that have format-specific features. Learn more about prices and ways to get access.

SFTP Definition

SFTP, or Secure File Transfer Protocol, is a standard method of transferring files from one system to another. It can be used to exchange information between users or move data from a computer to an online server. SFTP can be accessed from anywhere and organized into directories that act like folders on a computer, making it possible to use the same SFTP for different purposes.

SFTP is a faster, more cost-effective method of transferring files over the internet, making it popular among business owners.

Clients often use SFTPs to set up file transfer integrations, such as with a repricer or a vendor.

Request an SFTP

Sellercloud Support can provide an SFTP for a one-time setup fee of $37.50 and a $35 monthly charge. When requesting an SFTP, submit a ticket with written confirmation of the fees.

VAN Definition

VAN, or Value-Added Network, is a private network provider where EDI documents are transmitted and exchanged with the help of an SFTP mailbox set up to act as an intermediary to store the data.

A VAN also gives users the ability to track communicated documents and backup or recover files when needed. This makes it a more secure method of transferring EDI documents.

Clients often use VANs for EDI integrations where the document exchange does not go through third parties, e.g. Rithum (formerly CommerceHub).

Request a VAN

The cost to set up a VAN connection is $115.00/month with no setup fee. This cost is set per connection. For example, integrating with a channel that uses 2 IDs for different document types will cost $230.00/month.

To request a new VAN mailbox, you must provide the ISA Qualifier and ISA ID (also known as the “EDI ID”) for both yourself and your trading partner (usually a channel or a vendor). The Qualifier should be ZZ , and the ID should be your phone number. Using a phone number ensures that the ID is unique. Your trading partner will provide their Qualifier and ID.

Your ISA ID has to be a new and unique ID that you have not used in the past and that nobody else is using. We usually advise choosing a phone number to ensure only you will use it. This only works if you have not requested a VAN using the same phone number before.

The process to set up a VAN is as follows:

  1. The client will provide Sellercloud with the necessary ISA Qualifiers and IDs as explained above and written confirmation of the fees.
  2. Sellercloud will request the VAN setup.
  3. Once the connection is set up, Sellercloud will provide the client with the SFTP mailbox credentials.
