Overview
Sellercloud allows you to create and assign Product Types to your products. Each product can be assigned one product type. Product types serve three purposes:
- Filtering and Organization: The Product Types filter, available on various pages in Sellercloud, such as the Manage Catalog Page, can be used to sort products based on their product type.
- Automated Configuration: Product types can be used to automatically apply default product settings for specific channels and speed up listing creation and management.
- Channel Attribute Mapping: Product types can be used to map Sellercloud product properties to channel-specific fields to facilitate the channel listing process.
Prerequisites
Before creating, configuring, and assigning product types, you must decide their scope within your account.
When the setting is:
- Enabled – Product types are client-wide, which means they are available to products from all companies in your Sellercloud account. If this setting is enabled, all new product types will be created under your default company.
- Disabled – Product types are company-specific, which means each company has its own product types. With this setup, product types have to be configured per company, and you will be able to export and then import to copy them across companies.
Create Product Types
You can create product types individually or in bulk.
Individually
To create a single product type:
- Go to Catalog > Product Types.
- Click the Actions icon at the bottom right and select Create.
- Enter the Product Type.
- Optionally, check Is Default Product Type to set this as the default product type that will be automatically assigned to all newly created products under the company it belongs to.
When product types are company-specific, changing the company of any SKU will automatically switch the product type assigned to that SKU to the default product type. However, when product types are client-wide and a product’s company changes, the assigned product type will not change. - If the client setting Enable Product Types To Be Client Wide is disabled, you must also select the Company the product type will belong to.
- Click Create Product Type.
In Bulk

- Go to Catalog > Tools > Import Product Info.
- Select Import Product Types.

Create or Edit a Product Type
- To access the Product Types page, either go to Company Settings > Product Types (on top) or click the Manage tab next to the Product Type field on the Product Home page.
- Click Add New Product Type or Edit.
- Enter a type name.
- If applicable, select categories for Amazon, Buy.com, eBay, Sears, and Newegg.
- If applicable, select default eBay templates and policies.
- You can also select a Buy.com template that matches the product type. Selecting a template will allow you to create a brand-new listing on Buy.com. Currently, the mapped templates are limited, so check with Sellercloud Support to see if an applicable category template can be placed on your server or created, if necessary.
- Newegg also has templates, but they are only needed when posting listings through FTP. When using the API (recommended), templates are unnecessary.
- When product types are set as client-wide, you can still map a product type to website/Magento categories, even though those categories are company-based.
- Select a company from the dropdown at the top right. The website and/or Magento categories will appear.
- Map the product type by selecting a category.
- Save.
- Select another company to display its website categories, select, and save.
- Custom columns can be linked to Product Type. This will hide any unlinked custom columns from displaying on the product when that Product Type is selected. The Client Setting Filter custom columns to be per product type must be enabled. If so, the custom columns will appear on the product type page for selecting to link.
Import Product Types
- On the Product Types page, click Import Product Types,
- Download the template and populate it with appropriate categories.
- Import the template.
Assign Product Types to SKUs
- Individually – On the Product Home page, click the product type (by default, it is set to Misc). Select the product type from the drop down and save.
- Bulk update – Use the column header ProductTypeName.
